ABPA COMMITTEE INFORMATION

At the discretion of the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee, committees can be established to perform specific or ongoing tasks. The committees are headed by a chairperson who is appointed by the Executive Committee and ratified by the Board of Directors. Any member in good standing can apply to be on a committee by filling out a committee application. The chairman of the committee will forward the petition to the full committee for review. The standing committees are as follows:

Application for Committee Membership

The committees function as advisors to the Board of Directors. The committees must follow their committee charge as established by the Board of Directors. The committee actions are subject to the approval of the Board of Directors.

An annual international conference is held each year at the end of April. The location of the conference is chosen by the conference committee and approved by the Board of Directors. Throughout the year, various seminars may be held in different areas of the country by the Regions or by the local Chapters.

Within each Region, Chapters have been formed to provide a more localized response to member needs. All Chapters must have Chapter bylaws which are consistent with the Association bylaws, and all Chapter actions must be consistent with National policies and guidelines.

Develop an outline of responsibilities for all Board members
Establish criteria for administrative policies (i.e. travel reimbursement, election procedures, printing and/or mailing for chapters, etc.)

Establish formal notification procedures to Board members

The American Backflow Prevention Association's Certification Committee is charged with the responsibility to evaluate training needs in the backflow industry and develop guidelines and need-to-know criteria as appropriate. Including, but not limited to, the responsibility for recommending and developing policy and procedures that determine the technical aspects of the American Backflow Prevention Association's Voluntary Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certification Program.

Mission:

It is the intent, responsibility, and mission of the Membership Committee of the American Backflow Prevention Association to pursue providing the association’s membership quality benefits (i.e., renewal procedures, membership guidelines, quality standards for communication and reporting procedures for the membership and the association), growing the association’s membership base; conceive, construct, administer, and maintain the ABPA Chapters, Board of Directors, Executive Committee, ABPA’s International Office, and those entities designated for contact by ABPA authorities; conceive, construct, administer, and maintain the ABPA Chapters Reporting Policy and Procedures; conceive, construct, administer, and maintain the ABPA’s Strategic Plan in order to publicize, inform, and keep current those affiliated associations, the public at large, governmental agencies, etc. who have the same or similar interest in the field of drinking water protection; fulfillment of those duties and responsibilities that the Membership Committee may be charged with. This will be accomplished with the dedication, perseverance, and enthusiasm of those Membership Committee Members, its committee chair, and all that choose to participate in order to help the Membership Committee accomplish this mission for the American Backflow Prevention Association.

Establish communications procedures between Chapters, Board of Directors, Headquarters Office, etc.

Committee Functions

The ABPA National Codes and Standards Committee reviews the language and practices of all existing and proposed cross-connection control and backflow prevention sections of national and international codes and standards for correctness and continuity. The NC&S Committee submits any suggested changes or corrections through the proper channels of the individual code and standard bodies for their approval and the individual organizations usage and publication.

Committee Functions:

The Publications Committee shall consider and recommend to the Board policies and procedures under which technical papers, reports, discussions, brochures, and other literature resulting from the activities of the association and its committees shall be edited, produced, and distributed, with the objective of publishing information which in quality and quantity will be of maximum service to members in the field of backflow prevention and cross connection control. The Publications Committee shall complete any other duties as prescribed by the Board of Directors.

    Scholarship – ABPA Scholarship

The American Backflow Prevention Associations Public Awareness & Education Committee, is charged with the responsibility to develop educational materials. The purpose is to promote public awareness of Cross Connection Control and Backflow Prevention.  Mission Statement:  Public Awareness and Education Committee, through all resources available, will provide awareness and education materials about cross connection control and backflow prevention for distribution to local chapters and the public at large.

The scholarship, awarded annually, will provide a one-time grant of $1,000 to the most outstanding applicant. The competition is open to all persons of high school age (over 13 and under 20 as of January 1) who are legal residents of the United States or Canada. The essayist is NOT required to be college bound! This scholarship can be used for any type of advanced education.
